Saban Films has obtained the U.S. distribution rights to Light of My Life, the directorial debut film from Oscar winner Casey Affleck, who also wrote and stars in the piece. Casey Affleck’s production company Sea Change Media is set to produce the The World to Come, the new feature from director Mona Fastvold and screenwriters Ron Hansen and Jim Shepard, adapted from Shepard’s acclaimed short story.

Post-apocalyptic dramas have become such a staple of modern storytelling that they often take the backdrop for granted, as if audiences know the way the world ends so well that it requires little elaboration. Casey Affleck’s bleak “Light of My Life” — in which he directed, wrote, and stars — falls into this loose category of talky, character-based survival dramas that may as well exist in a single expanded universe.
Brad Pitt, at his laconic and charismatic best, produced 160 minutes of classy work, while Casey Affleck shone in the true anti-hero role. Elegantly shot and lovingly, languorously paced, the film also boasted one of that decade's best soundtracks by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.
Scott Free and Black Bear have set Jason Segel, Dakota Johnson and Oscar-winner Casey Affleck to star in The Friend, a fact-based touching drama that STX International will launch for offshore sales at the European Film Market. Directing is Gabriela Cowperthwaite, whose Blackfish was a BAFTA nominee for Best Documentary and who most recently helmed the Kate Mara starrer Megan Leavey.
