The VSN works with VSOs and other veteran/military support organizations to place veterans and their spouses in employment within 29 states. We focus squarely on the individual needs of employers and veterans to provide the best possible match that will be mutually beneficial to both sides. The VSN takes an ecosystem approach -- supporting veterans, their families, and the organizations that employ them--by addressing all possible barriers to employment within the system. We build bridges between employers and veterans and provide the support infrastructure each need to succeed.

Accomplishments and Impact: How is the organization, program or individual's work making a difference?: *

For almost a decade, Easterseals DC MD VA has placed over 21,000 veterans in meaningful and lasting employment and coached over 8,000 in the pursuit of self-defined career paths. The Easterseals Veteran Staffing Network (VSN) is a nonprofit staffing agency, which helps our nation’s veterans and military spouses successfully transition into the civilian workforce. We serve all veterans, wounded warriors, Reserves/National Guard, homeless veterans, and their spouses. We use a private industry model for sustainability. 44 percent of VSN candidates that are interviewed are offered jobs compared to the national average of 20 percent.

Services to job seekers include:
• One-on-one coaching of resumes and sharpening interview skills; including the development of individualized career plans;
• Support with the translation of military experience to civilian work experience;
• Conducting targeted employer research;
• Development of effective networking strategies;
• Access to certification programs; and
• Education on financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and ongoing mentoring.

Service to employers include:
• Sourcing qualified veterans for executive- to entry-level positions for almost any industry;
• Providing temp-to-perm, contract, and direct-hire placements; and
• Continuous support to veteran recruits even after being hired.
Easterseals VSN also provides wrap-around services to veterans that help alleviate other barriers to employment such as:
• Homelessness (Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program);
• Substance abuse;
• Mental health (Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Easterseals); and
• Childcare challenges (Little Warriors Child Development Program or Military Family Respite Program).

Our goal is not to simply get people jobs, but to establish self-sufficiency, meaningful careers, and community integration. We believe in providing a hand up, not a handout. With more than 50 percent of VSN staff being veterans themselves, we provide support from a place of empathy and true understanding of the challenges veterans face when transitioning to the civilian workforce.

Mike Sanderson, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, is an incredible example of how VSN was able to change his life after losing his job, facing cancer, and possibly becoming homeless all within half a year. After connecting with VSN recruiter Angie Gresh, within 2 weeks he received resume assistance, placement with a great employer, and financial stability. https://bit.ly/2JuYwdC

Kevin Grandbois is a U.S. Army veteran, who served in Afghanistan. He is married and has 4 children to support. While serving he became wounded and was released from active duty. After receiving medical treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center he faced major unemployment issues and was in danger of becoming homeless. He eventually reached out to VSN for help and qualified to receive funding to go through Homeland Security Training. After completing the program, he was able to be placed into suitable employment.

To illustrate the benefits of the VSN wrap-around services is the story of the Inzeo family. Mike Inzeo is an Army veteran, whose son was born with major developmental issues. In order to care for his son’s health needs, Mike worked 12-hour night shifts and spent his days doing physical and occupational therapy with his son. This routine led to extreme exhaustion for Mike that he eventually came to Easterseals to seek help with early intervention and childcare support. While his son was getting support for his disability and developmental needs, a staff member from VSN connected with Mike after finding out that he was looking for better employment opportunities where he could spend more time with his son. In a short time, he was placed in a new job where he got to work during the day and be home to spend with his son. https://bit.ly/2DbmPwT
